Simulated Blood Typing Lab
Project Overview: Real blood typing works by mixing a blood sample with special antibodies and watching for clumping, called agglutination, to determine whether someone is type A, B, AB, or O. This project uses a safe, simulated version of that same lab technique with milk and food coloring standing in for blood and antibodies.
Materials Required:
4 cups of milk, divided (standing in for "blood" samples)
Red and blue food coloring
White vinegar (standing in for "antibody" reagent)
Baking soda solution (standing in for a second "antibody" reagent)
4 to 6 small clear cups

Instructions:
Divide your milk into a few small cups and tint each one slightly differently with drops of red and blue food coloring to represent different "patient samples" (keep track of which is which on a separate answer key, so it's a surprise).
Take a small sample of "blood" from each cup and place it into a fresh testing cup.
Add a few drops of vinegar (simulating "Anti-A" reagent) to one portion of each sample and observe closely for any clumping or curdling.
Take a fresh portion of each sample and add a few drops of baking soda solution instead (simulating "Anti-B" reagent), observing for any reaction.
Based on which reagent produced a reaction, determine the simulated "blood type" for each unknown sample, then check your answer key.
Congratulations, you just simulated a real diagnostic lab technique.
