Buffer Capacity Test with Antacid Tablets
Project Overview: Your blood must stay within an incredibly narrow pH range to keep you alive, and it relies on natural buffers to resist sudden changes in acidity or alkalinity. This project shows off buffering in action using an antacid tablet, the same kind of chemistry your stomach and bloodstream rely on every day.
Materials Required:
2 to 3 antacid tablets
White vinegar
Water
2 clear cups
A dropper
A spoon
Instructions:
Fill one cup with plain water and drop in a crushed antacid tablet, stirring until mostly dissolved. This is your "buffered" solution.
Fill the second cup with just plain water, no tablet. This is your control.
Using the dropper, add vinegar to the control cup one drop at a time, counting each drop, and stop as soon as you notice any change (or use pH strips if you have them).
Reset with a fresh cup of the antacid solution, and repeat the same drop-by-drop vinegar test.
Compare how many drops of vinegar it took to cause a noticeable change in each cup.
Congratulations, you just tested a real chemical buffer system.
Fun Fact: The antacid solution should be able to absorb far more vinegar before showing any change because it acts as a buffer, and this is the same principle your blood uses to stay at a stable pH even after you eat something acidic.
