Steam Distillation: Extracting Orange Peel Oil

Project Overview: Have you ever noticed that strong citrus scent when peeling an orange? That smell comes from natural oils trapped inside the skin. Scientists use a process called steam distillation to extract these oils in a highly concentrated form. In this project, you will build your own simple extraction setup using just a household pot and some ice.

Materials Required:

  1. Peels from 2 to 3 oranges

  2. A pot with a lid 

  3. Water

  4. A heat-safe bowl that fits inside the pot

  5. Ice cubes

  6. A spoon

Instructions: 

  1. Place the orange peels in the bottom of the pot and add about an inch of water, being careful not to let the peels dry out.

  2. Place a heat-safe bowl in the center of the pot, floating or propped up so it sits above the water level, without touching the peels.

  3. Place the lid on the pot upside down, so its handle dips down toward the bowl inside.

  4. Pile ice cubes on top of the upside-down lid.

  5. Now, gently heat the pot on low to medium heat; as steam rises and hits the cold lid, it will condense and drip down into the bowl below, carrying the fragrant orange oil with it. 

  6. After about 15 to 20 minutes, turn off the heat and carefully check the bowl for the fragrant, oily liquid that collected.

Congratulations, you just performed a real extraction technique used in the perfume and food industries.

Fun Fact: The citrus oil you extracted, called d-limonene, isn't just used for scent; it's also a natural solvent strong enough to dissolve certain plastics, which is why it's a common ingredient in eco-friendly cleaning products.
