Yvonne Brill
As a child growing up in Canada, Yvonne Brill was fascinated by science and mathematics. She loved solving problems and was always curious about how things worked. At a time when very few women became engineers, she decided she would follow her passion anyway.
After graduating from university, Brill began working in aerospace engineering. She spent years designing propulsion systems for satellites and spacecraft. Her greatest achievement was creating a highly efficient engine that helped satellites stay in the correct position while orbiting Earth. This made satellites more reliable and allowed them to remain in space for much longer.
Although most people have never heard of Yvonne Brill, her work affects everyday life. Weather forecasts, television broadcasts, GPS navigation, and communication systems all depend on satellites that use technology inspired by her research.
Yvonne Brill proved that determination and creative thinking can lead to innovations that quietly improve the lives of millions of people.
