Janaki Ammal

Born in 1897, she was one of India's first female botanists and a pioneering plant geneticist. At a time when both women and Indians faced discrimination in science, Ammal built an international career through her expertise in cytogenetics—the study of chromosomes. Her research on sugarcane helped develop higher-yield, climate-adapted varieties that supported India's agricultural industry. She also studied medicinal plants and worked to preserve India's native biodiversity long before conservation became a global priority. Later, she joined the Royal Horticultural Society, contributing to the classification and breeding of ornamental plants. Beyond her scientific discoveries, Janaki Ammal became a powerful symbol of perseverance, proving that talent and determination could overcome social barriers. Today, she is remembered as one of India's most influential botanists and an early advocate for environmental conservation.
