Asima Chatterjee

Born in 1917, she became the first Indian woman to earn a Doctor of Science degree and one of the country's leading organic chemists. Her research focused on isolating chemical compounds from medicinal plants to develop treatments for diseases such as malaria and epilepsy. She contributed to the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs that became widely used in India, helping bridge traditional herbal knowledge with modern pharmaceutical science. Throughout her career, Chatterjee published hundreds of scientific papers and mentored numerous young researchers. She also became the first woman to receive many prestigious scientific honors in India, breaking barriers in a field largely dominated by men. Her work demonstrates how chemistry can transform nature into medicine and improve public health, making her one of India's most accomplished yet often overlooked scientists.
