Fe del Mundo
Fe del Mundo was a pioneering physician whose work transformed child healthcare in the Philippines. Born in 1911, she dedicated her life to improving medical treatment for infants and children, especially those living in underserved communities. She became one of the first women admitted to a major medical institution in the United States and later returned to the Philippines to apply her knowledge where it was most needed. Throughout her career, she conducted research on infectious diseases, malnutrition, and pediatric care. She also developed low-cost medical devices, including an improvised incubator designed for rural areas without reliable electricity. Her innovations helped make healthcare more accessible to vulnerable populations. Beyond her scientific and medical contributions, she inspired generations of women to pursue careers in medicine and research. Her legacy remains a powerful example of how science can be used to improve lives and promote social progress.
