Mary Jackson

Mary Jackson was born in 1921 in Hampton, Virginia, and showed a strong interest in mathematics and science from a young age. After earning degrees in mathematics and physical science, she worked as a teacher and bookkeeper before joining the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the organization that later became NASA, as a mathematician. Determined to become an engineer, Mary challenged segregation laws by gaining permission to attend engineering classes at a whites-only school. In 1958, she became NASA's first Black female engineer, where she conducted research that improved the performance and safety of aircraft. Throughout her career, she also advocated for women and minorities, mentoring young professionals and working to create more equal opportunities in STEM. Mary Jackson's courage and determination continue to inspire future generations to pursue careers in engineering and break barriers that once seemed impossible.
