Lise Meitner
Lise Meitner was born on November 7, 1878, in Vienna, Austria, into a Jewish family. She grew up in a time when women had very limited access to higher education, especially in science. Despite these restrictions, she was determined to study physics and became one of the first women in Austria to earn a doctorate in the subject. Her intelligence and persistence allowed her to enter a scientific world that was still overwhelmingly dominated by men.
After studying in Vienna, Meitner moved to Berlin, Germany, where she began working with chemist Otto Hahn. Although women faced serious discrimination in laboratories and universities, Meitner became a respected physicist and spent many years researching radioactivity and atomic structure. She later worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, where she and Hahn collaborated on experiments involving uranium and neutron bombardment. By the 1930s, however, the rise of Nazi power made life increasingly dangerous for Jewish scientists in Germany and Austria.
In 1938, Meitner was forced to flee Germany because of her Jewish background. She escaped to Sweden, where she continued her scientific work under difficult conditions. That same year, Hahn and another chemist carried out experiments that produced puzzling results from uranium. Meitner, together with her nephew Otto Frisch, correctly explained what had happened: the uranium atom had split into smaller parts, releasing a huge amount of energy. They described this process as nuclear fission. This explanation was one of the most important breakthroughs in modern physics and later became central to both nuclear energy and atomic weapons research.
Although Meitner’s interpretation was essential to understanding nuclear fission, the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded only to Otto Hahn. Meitner’s exclusion is still considered one of the most significant cases of scientific credit being unfairly denied. She herself refused to work on the atomic bomb and remained deeply concerned about the destructive uses of nuclear science.
Lise Meitner died on October 27, 1968, in Cambridge, England, at the age of 89. Today, she is remembered as a brilliant physicist whose work changed modern science and whose life reflects both the achievements and injustices faced by women in STEM.
