How to Make Instant Snow!
Project Overview:
Just by adding water, let’s use sodium polyacrylate powder to create a heap of soft, cold, and fluffy snow, minus the ice, in a matter of seconds! This project requires sodium polyacrylate powder, which is a unique water-absorbent powder, and it demonstrates how some materials can soak up liquid and expand far beyond their original size, all without any heat, stove, or a long wait time. In fact, sodium polyacrylate powder is able to absorb 800 times its weight in liquid! WARNING: Do not consume the powder or the snow, and avoid getting it in your eyes! Additionally, make sure to wash your hands after handling the snow.
Materials:
2 tablespoons Sodium Polyacrylate Powder (also called "Insta-Snow" powder)
2 cups Water
1 Large Mixing Bowl or Tray
1 Measuring Cup
1 Spoon
Instructions:
Pour the 2 tablespoons of sodium polyacrylate powder into your large mixing bowl or tray, spreading it out in a thin, even layer
Measure out 2 cups of water
Slowly pour the water over the powder a little at a time, watching closely as it starts to react immediately
Use your spoon to gently break up and fluff the mixture as it thickens and expands
Keep adding small amounts of water until the powder has fully expanded into a fluffy, snow-like texture (stop adding water once it stops absorbing and looks like fresh snow)
Touch and scoop your instant snow - notice how it feels cool, light, and slightly damp, just like real snow
If your snow starts drying out and shrinking after a while, you can add a few more drops of water to fluff it back up again
When you're done, the snow can be thrown
