How to Make a Compass

Project Overview:
All you need is a sewing needle and a magnet, and you can build your own working compass without any batteries or electronics.. It's a hands-on way to get a feel for magnetism and to see Earth's magnetic field actually do something you can watch happen. WARNING: Handle the needle carefully since the tip is sharp.

Materials:

  1. 1 sewing needle

  2. 1 magnet

  3. A small piece of cork, or a slice cut from a wine cork

  4. A shallow bowl of water

  5. A real compass (optional, just to check your results)

Instructions:

  1. Rub the needle against the magnet in one direction only about 30-40 times and lift the magnet away between each stroke and always start from the same end

  2. Push the needle carefully through the cork so it sits flat and balanced

  3. Fill your bowl with water

  4. Set the cork with the needle on top of the water, gently, so it can float freely without bumping the sides

  5. Give it a few seconds to stop spinning and settle

  6. See which way the needle's pointing, and check it against a real compass if you've got one

  7. Give the cork a light spin with your finger and watch whether the needle turns back to that same direction again

Explanation:
All that rubbing against the magnet isn't just busywork — it actually gets the tiny particles inside the needle to line up facing the same way, which turns the needle into a weak magnet of its own! Once it's floating on the water, nothing's holding it in place anymore, so it's free to swing toward whatever's pulling on it — and that's where Earth comes in. The planet itself behaves like a giant magnet, with magnetic field lines running from pole to pole, and your needle just wants to fall in line with them. That's why the cork keeps settling back to the same direction no matter how many times you spin it — it's not doing anything special, it's just responding to the pull of the whole planet around it. It's the same basic idea behind every real compass ever made, just using stuff you've probably already got in a kitchen drawer!
