How to Make a Bouncy Egg Without Boiling!
Project Overview:
Let’s make an uncracked raw egg into a squishy, bouncy, see-through egg with no shell at all without boiling! This can happen by soaking an egg in vinegar for a few days! The hard shell will dissolve away completely, leaving behind a rubbery egg that can bounce around without breaking! It's a fun way to observe how acid can react with and break down a solid material.
Materials:
1 Uncracked Raw Egg
White Vinegar
1 Tall Glass or Jar
A Flashlight (optional, for the glowing effect)
Instructions:
Place the raw egg gently into the tall glass or jar
Pour enough vinegar into the glass to completely cover the egg
Watch closely for the first few minutes and notice tiny bubbles forming all over the shell
Let the egg sit in the vinegar for 24 hours, then carefully pour out the old vinegar and replace it with fresh vinegar
Let the egg sit for another 24 hours in the fresh vinegar
After 48 hours total, very gently lift the egg out of the vinegar and carefully rinse it off with water
(OPTIONAL) Hold the egg up to a flashlight in a dark room and notice how the light shines through it
Explanation:
Eggshells are made of a hard mineral called calcium carbonate, and vinegar contains an acid called acetic acid which reacts with this mineral and breaks it apart. As the vinegar dissolves the egg’s shell, it produces bubbles of carbon dioxide, which is why you see fizzing all over the shell's surface. Additionally, after enough time, the shell dissolves completely, leaving behind the soft membrane that was underneath it the whole time. The membrane is strong and stretchy enough to hold the egg together, which is why the egg becomes bouncy and squishy instead of falling apart. Also, it's thin enough to let light shine through!
