Homemade Microscope with a Water Droplet Lens

Project Overview: You don't need an expensive microscope to see the tiny world up close; you just need water. A single droplet can bend light exactly the way a lens does, thanks to its curved shape. This project turns your smartphone into a surprisingly powerful microscope using nothing but a drop of water. 

Materials Required:

  1. A smartphone with a camera

  2. A small piece of clear plastic or glass, or a laser-cut acrylic sheet

  3. An eyedropper

  4. Water

  5. Small objects to examine (a leaf, salt crystals, fabric, an ant)

Instructions:

  1. Place a tiny drop of water directly over your smartphone's camera lens, being careful not to get any water inside the phone itself.

  2. Place the object you want to examine on a flat, well-lit surface.

  3. Hold the phone very close to the object, closer than normal, and let the camera try to focus.

  4. Take a photo or video, then zoom in on the image afterward to see the extra magnification the water droplet added.

  5. Try different drop sizes and shapes to see how the magnification changes.

Congratulations, you just built a working lens using nothing but water.

Fun Fact: This is the same principle that early scientists like Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used over 300 years ago to build some of the first microscopes made, and he used his glass lenses to become the very first person to see living bacteria.
