DNA Model with Candy
Project Overview: DNA is often called the blueprint of life, but its twisted ladder shape can be hard to picture in a textbook. This project lets you physically build a model of DNA's double helix using candy, and in the process, learn the actual base-pairing rules that every living cell on Earth follows.
Materials Required:
Licorice or Twizzlers (2 long strands for sugar-phosphate backbone); yarn or thick string or aluminium foil rolled into strands can be used as alternatives
Toothpicks
4 colors of gummy candy or marshmallows (representing the 4 DNA bases: A, T, C, G)
A ruler or pencil
Instructions:
Lay your two licorice strands parallel to each other; these represent the two sides of the DNA "backbone."
Assign each candy color a letter: for example, red = A (adenine), yellow = T (thymine), green = C (cytosine), and orange = G (guanine).
Push a toothpick through one candy piece, then connect it across to a candy piece on the opposite strand, always pairing A with T and C with G, never any other combination.
Repeat this all the way down both strands, building rung after rung like a ladder.
Once you've built several rungs, gently twist the entire structure into a spiral shape to form the classic double helix.
Congratulations, you just built a physical model of the molecule that codes for every living thing on the planet.
Fun Fact: The base-pairing rule you just followed, A always with T and C always with G, is called complementary base pairing, and it's the exact rule your own cells use every single time they copy your DNA.
