Stephanie Louise Kwolek

Born on 31st July of 1923, She was an incredible chemist at DuPont. Kwolek is best known for inventing Kevlar (poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide), a fiber stronger than steel yet lightweight.

Initially researching new synthetic fibers, she discovered an unusual polymer solution that others had overlooked.

Despite skepticism, she insisted on testing it, which ultimately led to the breakthrough material.

Thanks to her hardwork, Kevlar is now widely used in bulletproof vests, helmets, and aerospace engineering.

Her work significantly improved safety technologies, particularly in law enforcement and military contexts.

As a result, Kwolek’s invention has saved countless lives worldwide.

Beyond her scientific achievements, Kevlar was also a passionate advocate to women’s participation in STEM. As one of the few women chemists working at DuPont during the mid-20th century, Kwolek often spoke about the challenges she faced in a male-dominated field and sought to encourage young women to pursue careers in science.

Even after retirement, Kowlek volunteered her time to mentor students across the country. She frequently demonstrated experiments such as the “nylon rope trick” to engage students — especially girls — in the wonders of chemistry.
